shoeboxes & captain kangaroo
My biggest problem when I was four years old was that we never had enough shoeboxes. I was always so happy when anyone in the family got new shoes because it meant that I could finally make the thing that Captain Kangaroo made that day. Oh, but the day that he made a choo-choo and used 5 or 6 at once!
Enjoy this trip down memory lane. Especially the commercials.
I can see now why these sorts of commercials were so effective at giving me the gimmees!

We never had enough shoe boxes either. I always wanted them for Barbie furniture (and I used to use my mom's rings for Barbie tiaras!). Thanks for bringing back those memories.
I made my doll house out of regular cardboard boxes glued and taped together and decorated with furniture and rugs cut out of Sears and Pennys catalogs. Making them was always more fun than playing with them.
Oh that was so great! I had that little Raggedy Ann and Andy Colorform House! What a great thing to share- thanks.
I just bought my little boy Thomas The Train Colorforms for Christmas, and nostalgia was a HUGE part of the deciding factor!
We didn't have Captain Kangaroo when I was growing up in Canada, but we had Mr. Dressup and he was very much the same. He had a "tickle trunk" filled with treasures and costume pieces.
In Canada, if you say "I will get it out of my tickle trunk" everyone knows what you mean. I use my tickle trunk as a coffee table in my office. Everyone knows it has good things in it that always change. Right now it has cheerleading pompoms, play money, PEZ dispensers, an Albert Einstien marionette and a crystal slipper.
I miss Captain Kangaroo! Thanks for making me feel little again!
Oh my goodness! Had the Raggety Ann colorforms, I am sure it was a short time after I saw that commercial. LOVED Captain Kangaroo. I think I need some super sugar crisps N-O-W.

My mom once bought me a wallpaper book!!!
Now THAT was great fun to decorate boxes with. My barbies lived in SUCH luxury!!!
I also had a "Make and Do" encyclopedia and I wanted to make everything and anything in it, but we never had the supplies around.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I loved the Captain, moose, bunny rabbit, and of course, MR Greenjeans! That shoebox house he made must've stuck in my subconscious, somehow. I'm still doing that it seems! :o)

My 20 month old & 3.5 yrs old girls were glued to this ~ what a great shoebox craft for kids!! Don't you love vintage children's tv? I remember making the Betty Crocker cakes & icing but we never had the oven! Yummy!!
