learning lessons the hard way

Today Baby and I met sweet friends Lorraine and Hope at Accessories of Old. It was a rainy, yucky day, especially for beltway driving, but, well, I wanted to see my friends. And I wanted my friends to meet Baby.

We were almost there when Baby stopped his sweet singing and started to grunt. Uh oh. I know what this means. So I start planning in my mind about how and where I'll change his diaper. I make a plan to park in a garage so that I can change his diaper on the backseat. And I find a parking garage right there, just two doors down from the store. Great!

But oh by golly, what a smell!

I took a deep breath...I can handle this. Or so I thought. As I took Baby out of the carseat, I saw the extent of the damage. Poo is everywhere. Oozing (forgive my choice of words) out of his diaper, all over his onesie, all over his pants. And, since I just picked him up from his car seat, all over me.

What should I do? Should I clean him up the best I can, put a new diaper on, and call my friends on my way out of the parking garage to give my regrets? Even though I just paid $9 for the honor of parking in the garage that I'm certain will not be refunded?

I used every last wipe there was and needed probably a good three more. As I'm cleaning him up, I'm thinking to myself "This isn't too bad. Let's see...I can ditch the pants, wipe up the poo that's on the onesie, and maybe this isn't as bad as it seems. We don't have to stay long..."

So that's what I did.

Thankfully, the day before I bought a snuggly-thingy for the stroller that's kind of like a sleeping bag with oh-so-soft fleece lining. I wrapped him up as snug as a bug and walked briskly to the store to see my friends. It was a nice, if brief, visit.

LESSON LEARNED:
1. Always pack extra clothes for Baby. ALWAYS.
2. Plan excursions around Baby's bowel movements.
3. You can never have too many wipes.
4. Obviously, you can give a baby too many pureed prunes.

I feel your pain. When I was just 2 weeks postpartum, I took my daughter out for her first trip out of the house to the OB for my c-section appointment. Of course she pooped, ooey, gooey breastmilk poop and it got all over her, her onesie and pants. And, I had no spare clothes with me. So much fun.

Ah yes, that happened to us when my little girl was about 6 months old. Luckily (?) I realized it in the dressing room of Macy's, so I just stripped her down, cleaned her as best I could & took her down to the kids section to buy a clean outfit, dressed just her in clean diaper. As you probably know, not too many people in Northern VA let their kids go around in public just dressed in a diaper, so I got some pretty funny looks!

Ahhh, the dreaded butt explosion! Always seems to happen at the wrong time. I think we've kept ours at a minimum by using cloth diapers, but sometimes the poopy even makes it past the great cloth barrier.

One time in particular we had our little girl dressed exceptionally well, only to find once we reached our destination that her butt had exploded and we had no change of clothes for her.

Oh well. We just got her cleaned up and turned right back around to drive another 30 minutes back home. It happens!

Found you via StumbleUpon.

With my oldest son it was a blow-out in a J.C. Penney bathroom. He was four months old. Poop behind his ears, between his toes and everywhere in between.

Those prunes. They deliver!

You are much in my prayers!

Welcome to babyhood!!! LOL
Lessons these little guys teach us are priceless. Loved your yesterday story. It is a miracle! Know you are the best this baby has in his/her life. Hugs to you both!

HA! That's happened to all of us at one time or another!!! I hate it when it's in public.
A couple months ago my son was sick during the night and had an explosion fill his diaper and oozed up his back and down his footsy jammies all the way to his toes. Luckily we were home so I threw him in the tub right away. SERIOUSLY- so gross!

Maybe you could make your own wipes to save on buying wipes for all these types of occasions!

Here's a recipe for it...good luck with future endeavors!

Such fun to relive all those memories through your new experiences. I still forget that you can't have enough clothes (even 5 year olds have unplanned moments)! I am so glad you went in anyway. The best part of being in the company of little ones is you realize nothing is perfect. So proud and inspired by you!

Hugs, Kim

Oh No!

This happened to me when my daughter was just 3 months old I was on an airplane going to Dallas. By the time we landed she had nothing on but a tee shirt and wrapped in her blanket. I was mortified. ha ha - now it's kind of funny.

XOXO

Oh yes. We call those "blow outs". I'm so sorry!! We always seemed to have those on the way to church.

Yuck! I think every mom has a similar story! I learned early on that it was just easier to keep an extra diaper bag in the trunk....loaded with spare clothes, diapers etc. : ) Thanks for sharing! Enjoy your weekend.

What a cute story! I remember those days. I remember shopping at Marshall Field's with my mom and my daughter had a mess that went up her back. I stripped her and washed her clean while my mom ran to the children's dept to buy new clothes. The messy ones went in the garbage can. And the 3 of us went off smelling sweet and clean.

What a universial experience!.. my #2 child ( no pun intended!) was famous for not going for DAYS!.. so as each *no-go* day came and went it became like a highstakes game to see if ou could get out and back before the "big-event" so to speak... Well My mom needed some help but it was day 6!..yes 6!.. and I knew we were temping fate but I put her in the car seat and off we went!.. we were not even out of the neighborhood when I heard the noise.. it was like a rumbling of a far off Earthquake.. I look in the rear view mirror to see breastfed baby poo bubbling (sorry) over her shoulders!!.. and it just keeps coming!.. her older brother ( by 18 months) starts yelling and pointing that it's coming out the bottom of the carseat.. By this time I was stuck in traffic that made it quicker to go to my mom's than to get back and get home.

We get there and I take car seat and baby directly to mom's bahtroom and start hosing them both down with the shower massage.

Got to love it!

It sounds like you handled it like a pro! When my son was just a month old, we took him to a wedding. Someone had given him the sweetest most incredibly adorable outfit, purchased in France and really unlike anything else in his entire closet. What a perfect occasion to wear such an outfit- until we pulled up for the reception and he did one of those horrific up the backers. I swear he had poo in his neck wrinkles. No one even got to see his little outfit but I am happy to say we had additional, though less cute, clothes for him in my bag.

You are getting plenty of hands-on experience, that's for sure. LOL

You'll be a pro in no time!

This happened to me in Disney World! My son was going on 3. I had just given him apple juice which acted very well. I think he perfumed the entire restroom. I also had to clean Disney's stroller. And I had brought more clothes. Whew! Thanks for the 19 year old memory-I can still remember that!

...oh, a wonderful reason to leave a "baby bundle" in your car. After my first child (now seventeen!) dropped the bowel movement bomb on our way to a family get-together, AND I was tired of hauling baby bags stuffed the size of Samsonite luggage, I decided to keep an "emergency" kit for him in the car: diapers, change of clothes, socks, shoes (solid color canvas, to go with anything), burp rags, bib, and spare blanket, all rolled tightly in a cute cloth bag. Murphy's Law being what it is, accidents/blow outs only happened when said bundle wasn't in the car, which was thankfully, RARELY. Thank you for sharing your adventure!

Oh Amy, your post just sent me back about 16 years when my firstborn & I lived that exact scenario many, many times! Thank goodness for baby wipes! And washing machines...

Add me to the list that can relate to your drama! My youngest, now almost 13, was a regular "seat filler". Oh the mountains of wipes we went through!

Congratulations! You've graduated! That is the thesis for your PhD in parenting and you passed with flying colors. My niece with her 18 month old is the only person I've ever known who has not experienced the "up-the-onesie-to-the-neck" poop; we talked about it when they were here and she didn't have any idea what we were talking about. Well, she didn't breast feed but I'm guessing...you are doing so great!

You crack me up! Well Mama now you are on the road to learning things the way the rest of us do... the hard way. But then again aren't those lessons the ones we never forget? All's well that ends well! oh, and easy on the prunes... when I read that I literally laughed out loud. Thanks, I needed that!
