one lump or two?

I have a dream. It's a silly sort of dream, but a dream through and through. I would like to someday live next door to someone who stops by for tea or coffee regularly. I'm imagining that she'll be someone like Alicia or Lucy's Ethel or Betty from the Flintstones. We'll have a nice easy friendship with lots of laughter. Our tea or coffee visits will last just long enough to finish the tea and then we'll get back to our respective homes and busy lives. And I think we should wear frilly aprons.

Do dreams come true?

I have dreams like that, too. My closest friend of the moment lives a couple towns away. I fantasize about owning the house next door to hers so we can just pop over any time we want in our pj's and have coffee.

My friend is definately an Ethyl!

When I was young, our neighbors to the rear were like this. We had a gate between the yards and the families visited back and forth.

Until very recently, I had a bestest bud just one block away. We knew each other first (I kind of stalked her and moved into the neighborhood), otherwise I don't know how we would have met. I loved being able to drop in and have her drop by. After she got married, but before I did, I'd come home and be very confused because the movie I was watching was in a different spot, or at the end. Turns out she was hiding here when she needed space, and just hitting Play on whatever I had in the machine. We still talk all the time, but I miss her being nearby!

It could happen :) Imagine the biscuits she would bring to share and the butterflies that would flit around the garden as you chat.

I certainly hope that dreams do come true. It's my belief that when we give up dreaming, we die inside. I hope your particular dream is fulfilled--I don't know your neighborhood but maybe you can try and initiate some kind of neighborhood gathering and see what happens. That's what I did when I moved here and now I have tons of friends.

Six years ago I decided that I wanted to start a cookie exchange tradition. I thought: "I want this kind of thing in my life" and it's been a fixture ever since. I can't say that my friends are as fanatic about it as I am, but they appreciate it at their own level and complain if I threaten to cancel it.

My thought is that out of the many people that live near you, surely someone would like to come over for tea. Hedge your bets by inviting a few people to come individually at different times :) Just keep putting that thought out there, and be prepared for it to come true in some form or other

I hope dreams come true. I'd love that too. What happened to the tradition of taking tea in the afternoon?
It's funny you should post this as I am in the middle of an article about taking tea. What the etiquette is, what sorts of delicious treats one should eat, what you should wear etc. It's been one of the most fun writing projects. The research has been great. I'll dedicate to you Amy! xxx

Oh! That has been my dream for many, many years. But it just seems every person I know is sooo busy... I did used to have monthly tea parties with a small group from our church and those were *wonderful*... but they lasted just awhile. But like you, I have always wished for a neighbor like Ethel... may we both find one someday... In the meantime, I enjoy belonging to an email group where we share our days and our thoughts and it's almost like sitting around a table with tea or coffee--it's a very sweet alternative, one for which I am grateful. Thanks for describing something I've not put into words, but only felt for years... (Oh, and I've been meaning to tell you for over a month--I *love* your blog! It's my new favorite thing.) :) Blessings, Debra

I have always wanted a neighbor like that.
At one time I did and it was lovely, but she now has 3 children, (who she homeschools,) and is far too busy :(

Our street started out like that and I must say it was very nice. However now it is sort of like Whysteria Lane with all the drama. I like my neighbors but I also like my anonymity. I wish you a blooming friend ship with the perfect neighbor that knows when to come and go!

If I lived next door to you, I'd stop by all the time! :)

Aw, that's enough to make me cry, you sweetie (who I was supposed to call today, let alone come over, er, it was a total wash and I didn't do a single thing I was supposed to do). You must move to Portland immediately! Please!
