putting away Christmas...

It came and went in the blink of an eye and it was my very favorite Christmas ever.

I announced this morning while Alfredo had his pancakes that we would take down the Christmas tree today. "NOOOOoooooooOOOO!" he said. He thought it was a permanent fixture and it was so upsetting to him to think it was going away until next year. I appeased him by saying we had to decorate for his birthday.

If you have a real tree, you can do what we do, when my kids freak out b/c we take down the tree... we move it out to our porch (after taking off the decor). We leave on twinkle lights and add pine cones rolled in peanut butter and bird seed. The birds love it, and it looks beautiful if it gets kissed with snow! We leave it there, until Spring and then take it down, and mulch it.

Love that 1st ornament. I have a Santa tree, so I always like cute Santa ornaments. I'm taking my decorations down too...bummer. Decided to do a Valentine's Day tree though!

I am having a difficult time taking mine down too. Just don't want to let the season go!

My flat looked so bare for the first few days after taking down the decorations.

Well, true confessions...ours is still up. Jud has his office Christmas Party here tonight and so I got a reprieve! I can't stand to see it go!

We gave in and got an artificial Christmas tree last year. I NEVER thought that would happen. The Reaneys, who used to traipse through the Black Hills in bitter cold weather to cut down their own tree! We got it after Christmas and it is so much easier for Jud. It is a pretty nice one (thanks to the sales) and it fools people. Plus, I burn a nice pine candle all the time...heehee! Tomorrow it will be a goner!

I love what you told precious boy and I also like Valerie's idea.

Jud passed out a the big ball of red and white twine yesterday. He just doesn't understand!

Amy, when my kids were small, we had a 'Holiday Tree' that stayed up all year long. It was basically a big 3' many-armed tree branch, attached to a sturdy base and painted white. It lived on a low cabinet on our stairway landing.

Every month of the year, we decorated it with appropriate goodies - Valentine's Day, St. Paddy's Day, Fourth of July, etc. When there was no holiday in a month, we'd choose a theme: yellow ducks or fish or crayons! We used little ornaments, paper chains, ribbons, game pieces and kid's meal toys - just simple things. But to the kids, it was a big deal. (I always did special things at breakfast on holidays, too - green milk on St. Paddy's Day, for example!)

Perhaps this idea would make the absence of the Christmas tree easier for Alfredo to take?!
