little victories

I am taking my little victories one by one, like trophies. I'm not afraid, I'm just not always so sure of myself. When do I let you cry? Does throwing food always mean you don't like it? Why do you throw such a fit getting in and out of the car? Where is that instruction manual anyway?

Baby's eating some scrambled eggs this morning. I can't tell you how exciting it is to discover what he loves and what he doesn't. I'm getting to know him by spoonfuls.

Last night I woke up from a deep sleep hearing him shout out. I walked dreamily but quickly down the hall, saying loudly as I entered his room "Here I am, baby!" but he was sound asleep. Did I dream it? Does that happen often?

I'm feeling so lucky today. And when Rich left for work this morning with a quick peck goodbye, there was such a look of love in his eyes. Love and pride and really sheer amazement.

I really wish I could show you this scrambled egg mustached little boy.

Thank God for you and your hubby. You must be truly wonderful people. And, your mommy insticts are so natural! From all of us that are oh-so-scared to take the foster parenting step, Thanks for making a difference in this world!

Smiles,
Jen

So sorry - haven't had all of my coffee yet!

It sounds as tho you are doing wonderfully my dear girl. As for the food, hang in there. The food issue is not always easy even if you have known them from birth.

I remember reading when Jack was small that toddlers actually are learning about things like gravity and cause & effect when they throw food.

Whatever it might be, Jack still throws food. LOL

The car thing is hard too. One thing we have always done over here is to use a kitchen timer to make things more predictable. So, you set the timer and say, "Baby! When the timer goes off we are going to the park!" Sometimes being more prepared to get in the car makes it less of a struggle.

But, then again, toddlers just plain struggle. A lot. :-)

Amy,
You brought tears to my eyes. Of joy for what you're in the midst of. No instructions in the world can tell of what you've already figured out: It's all from the heart.

Congratulations to the new family! You'll have to come up with a cute nickname for the little guy now. Enjoy every moment of babyhood, messy egg throwing and all, it will go by faster than you know!

You are learning so much already and each day will bring something new. He sounds adorable and perfectly normal. The car thing could be any number of things; my babies loved the ride but hated the insertion/removal from the car part.

I bet both you and Rich are walking on clouds and I couldn't be more excited or happy for both of you.

Re: Waking up -- He may have been having night terrors. My son has them occasionally when things are stressful for him. If it happens again, just try to calm him down and get him back to sleep and don't mention it to him again. My son usually isn't really awake, even if he seems to be, and if we mention it the next day it seems to spring the memory of it to life for him. Otherwise it recedes into nothingness the way dreams often do.
I'm an adoptive parent and I understand your wish to keep everything so private for the children who come in and out of your home. It is probably a requirement, but even if it weren't I have a feeling you would do it anyway :) I still fiercely protect my child on the internet.

Welcome to the fold mother hen. You will soon learn to sleep with one eye open, an ear cocked and ready for the smallest of sounds and a full heart.
I am so so so glad you are in the world for children who need a special kind of love.

thank you too for protecting their identities...

Good for you, Amy! I've started a similar journey myself (getting to know my toddler nephew) who I'm taking care of for two weeks. I'm happy to say that over time, we're tuning into each other and he's trusting me more and settling down.

I'm sure that your little guy is feeling all the love and joy coming from your big heart. Enjoy all the blessings that this adventure brings :)

Your post brought tears to my eyes.
I'm an adoptive mother and I can tell you that it is so easy to love a child. Being a foster parent is difficult, because the agency wants you to take a child in and nurture them, but then it's difficult to let them go, when the time comes.
I do know many couples who have had the opportunity to adopt the child placed in their care.

I am praying that this is a Wonderful experience for you.

Have fun as you embark on a Great Adventure!

Day by day you will know. Though this I am certain...Everything you do is in the name of love and love like yours can do no wrong!

Since the mustachioed boy is too young to say it, I'll say it for him.

"Thank you mommy for the eggs, the happy room to sleep in, and all the love!"

That happened to me all the time when my daughter was a baby! I would burst into her room only to find her sleeping soundly. Congratulations on your newfound joy!
