Christmas came and went in a whirlwind...and then my poor sweet father got sick. He's all better now but it took a while for him to bounce back. I'm going to continue this little blogging break for another little bit...and then I'm hoping to get back, better than ever. But first I wanted to share this...<br />
<br />
My father getting sick was an eye-opener for our family. I haven't mentioned it here before but my darling mother was diagnosed with dementia a few years ago. So far, it seems she mostly has trouble remembering people's names and the names of some things. First it was the names of people she rarely saw, then progressing to people closer to her. And when my father was sick and not eating, we realized she wasn't eating either. The only thing I think she could remember to fix was peanut butter crackers.<br />
<br />
My father is completely dedicated to taking care of her. When we talk to them about the future and getting extra care, they insist that they are doing okay on their own. My mother prays to God everyday that her memory won't get any worse. Compared to others in similar circumstances, she actually is doing quite well. She even reminds my father to take his medicine. And she knows all about what bills to pay and when.<br />
<br />
What makes me so sad though is to think of the parts of my mother's life that are forever gone...no more knitting, sewing or crafting of any kind. No more cooking or baking. Back when she was first diagnosed, and we were looking blindly into the future, I worried how could she be happy if, among the things she loses, she loses hold of the things that make her happy. It's still a question I worry about but what I've realized is that the roots of who she is are still there. She is still my sweet mother.<br />
<br />
I never imagined that writing this post would be so hard but I suppose that's really why I've never mentioned it here. I'm in denial, for certain. This isn't a disease that ever improves, is it? Little bits, like crumbs from a cookie, are lost everyday. It hit me especially hard the other day when I called and said to her "This is Amy"...and there was a pause...an unspoken "who?" It's so silly because I knew she forgot others names. Somehow though, I just didn't think she'd forget mine.<br />
<br />
What can I do? Denial isn't the way. I know that. But maybe the thing to do is to realize that we still have most of that sweet cookie and treasure her. I suppose the day will come when most of the crumbs have fallen away. Perhaps then I can try to rejoice that I can still remember and those memories can make her whole again. My sweet mother with her golden heart. <br />
<br />
I'll join my mother's daily prayer. She doesn't ask that it be taken away...just that it not get any worse. See? Even in that, you can see how sweet her spirit is. So I do that...I pray that her memory stays as it is as long as God wills it.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_7aBcnJJAak/UqnakajXmrI/AAAAAAAAPi4/F8pmZCDrpvM/s1600/IMG_7321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_7aBcnJJAak/UqnakajXmrI/AAAAAAAAPi4/F8pmZCDrpvM/s640/IMG_7321.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted to show you how I made the prayer journals that I sold last month at the school craft fair. They were a big hit...and so easy to make.<br />
<br />
The idea for them was sparked by a project over at <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/" target="_blank">Big Picture Classes</a> using a cheap "brag book" type photo album ($1 from Walmart and Dollar Tree) to create a mini-book. Such a great idea...So you'll want to grab some of these $1 plastic photo albums. The ones at Walmart have fewer pages than the ones at Dollar Tree. Unfortunately Target sells these for twice the price.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--MDX-8opm3c/UqnakBz0F1I/AAAAAAAAPi0/X0zIhLNLkgA/s1600/IMG_7322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--MDX-8opm3c/UqnakBz0F1I/AAAAAAAAPi0/X0zIhLNLkgA/s640/IMG_7322.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aGhPaH-Iv08/UqnalLlHkXI/AAAAAAAAPjE/uvccKz01g3Y/s1600/IMG_7323.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aGhPaH-Iv08/UqnalLlHkXI/AAAAAAAAPjE/uvccKz01g3Y/s640/IMG_7323.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut a bunch of paper to 4" x 6". The great thing is that there's no waste since regular scrapbook paper is 12" x 12"...just cut each sheet in half (6") and then cut those halves into 3 4" sections. Easy peazy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UpSx6JfUef8/UqnamI51ZGI/AAAAAAAAPjI/2e9UIAyFpZA/s1600/IMG_7324.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UpSx6JfUef8/UqnamI51ZGI/AAAAAAAAPjI/2e9UIAyFpZA/s640/IMG_7324.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Next find and lay out the prayers or inspirational messages you'd like to include. Print them out on paper. You can either set it up to print on larger paper, 4 up or so, and then cut to size. I found it easier to cut my paper into 3" x 5" cards which I then fed through the printer. You could also use index cards for this.<br />
<br />
Another idea is to layout the pages at 4" x 6" and use digital scrapbooking elements to design the page. Or, you could create works of art for each page, scan them in and then print them out. It would take a while, sure, to make all that artwork...but then you'd have a wonderful gift you could reproduce for lots of people.<br />
<br />
Slip out the covers included with the book and use those as a guide to cut 4 pieces of printed paper. (If you are using 2-sided printed paper, you can just make 2 cover sheets...one for the front one for the back) I like the look of making the front and back cover the same design. It makes it look more like a book. You can include a label if you'd like on the front cover. And the inside cover could include a message to your recipient, including ideas for how to use the journal. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xpo2E3kbFbU/UqnamZLZVqI/AAAAAAAAPjM/tQeYf8vhMVk/s1600/IMG_7325.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xpo2E3kbFbU/UqnamZLZVqI/AAAAAAAAPjM/tQeYf8vhMVk/s640/IMG_7325.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, it's just assembling the book. I used 2-sided tape to secure the prayer card in the middle of one of the 4" x 6" papers and added the prayers to every right page. I put blank patterned papers on the left pages but you could put prayers there as well. My thought though is that you could tuck in prayer intentions on slips of paper...or write them directly on those blank printed papers, so that as you use the journal you can pray specifically for those people and situations. You can also add your own prayers...or change them out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-djk2_ur9MLI/Uqnane4cDGI/AAAAAAAAPjc/DC1wlQJg0mw/s1600/IMG_7326.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-djk2_ur9MLI/Uqnane4cDGI/AAAAAAAAPjc/DC1wlQJg0mw/s640/IMG_7326.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This next step is essential for transforming the book from cheap-plastic looking to something better. Simply add bookbinding tape along the spine. Instantly better. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b2l0YUCNDio/UqnaoZd8FsI/AAAAAAAAPjk/z9bXy9oYZyE/s1600/IMG_7327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b2l0YUCNDio/UqnaoZd8FsI/AAAAAAAAPjk/z9bXy9oYZyE/s640/IMG_7327.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm cranking these out! One of the ladies who bought a bunch at the craft fair called and wanted a few more, including one for her mother with specific prayers. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t1gFsDASA2Q/UqnaotY-vSI/AAAAAAAAPjo/bNnChU5qj54/s1600/IMG_7328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t1gFsDASA2Q/UqnaotY-vSI/AAAAAAAAPjo/bNnChU5qj54/s640/IMG_7328.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can take this idea and make all sorts of journals! It would be a great gift for a teacher with a photo of each child and a little note. It would also make a great project for a child to do...a way to create a book easily.<br />
<br />
Have fun with this idea!<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D8J0WuJNU8s/UqYhdHVf0ZI/AAAAAAAAPfg/aTrMwMztBsA/s1600/snowjar19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D8J0WuJNU8s/UqYhdHVf0ZI/AAAAAAAAPfg/aTrMwMztBsA/s640/snowjar19.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a snow day here so Alfredo and I decided to do a little crafting. Well, mostly I crafted and Alfredo staged an epic dinosaur battle all around me. I made this adorable snow jar using a regular jar and Cosmo Cricket's super Show Toppers jar lid and mini mobile. Let me show you how I did it.<br />
<br />
First, I used Claudine Hellmuth's paper doll set to make a fun version of our little family. It was super easy to do it in photoshop but if you don't have mad photoshop skills, you could just make the paper dolls the old-fashioned cut and paste way and then scan them in. Then, make them into Shinky Dinks by printing them onto Shrinky Dink Ink Jet plastic sheets! Shrinky Dinks will shrink to about 1/3 of the original print out size. One great thing about making Shrinky Dink paper dolls is that it's easier to cut out a paper doll that's 6" tall compared to one that's 2" tall. <br />
<br />
To prepare the file, lighten the colors quite a bit. As the image shrinks, it becomes darker. If you skip this step, your Shrinky Dinks will be too dark. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uGQjcJsw6a8/UqYkB5_2MHI/AAAAAAAAPfs/F6sAMNq8JpQ/s1600/shrinkydinks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uGQjcJsw6a8/UqYkB5_2MHI/AAAAAAAAPfs/F6sAMNq8JpQ/s640/shrinkydinks.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There's nothing so fun as making Shrinky Dinks! It was most fun to make them using a toaster oven so Alfredo could easily watch them shrink. They roll and fold onto themselves as they shrink, doing somersaults. You really must make little Shrinky Dinks of yourself!<br />
<br />
To make the snowy mound that we're standing on, I used a styrofoam ball, cut in half using a serrated kitchen knife. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b4FgGMXKMU0/UqYmc7mICwI/AAAAAAAAPf8/pkO1ZFJLtak/s1600/snowmound1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b4FgGMXKMU0/UqYmc7mICwI/AAAAAAAAPf8/pkO1ZFJLtak/s640/snowmound1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I covered the styrofoam surface with a generous, gooey coat of Alene's Tacky Glue... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-99FkVpyepS4/UqYmcwyoqTI/AAAAAAAAPf4/klYkdfzAc9E/s1600/snowmound2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-99FkVpyepS4/UqYmcwyoqTI/AAAAAAAAPf4/klYkdfzAc9E/s640/snowmound2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And then dumped clear glitter on top. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JtIxdVCXRus/UqYmd15pM7I/AAAAAAAAPgA/ZjSU1pYSmuY/s1600/snowmound3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JtIxdVCXRus/UqYmd15pM7I/AAAAAAAAPgA/ZjSU1pYSmuY/s640/snowmound3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I inserted two toothpicks (trimmed to about 2") to the snow mound so that I'd have something to attach my little people to. And I left this to dry a bit. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D6axHKJzC_0/UqYmfXx9cFI/AAAAAAAAPgQ/wH6zedNJBYY/s1600/snowmoundpegs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D6axHKJzC_0/UqYmfXx9cFI/AAAAAAAAPgQ/wH6zedNJBYY/s640/snowmoundpegs.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Meanwhile, I used the mini mobile from Cosmo Cricket to make a sweet little chandelier. I used some crinkly wire but you can use any kind of thin wire you have on hand. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ywx09uDxsvA/UqYoQ5CRIyI/AAAAAAAAPgc/s8js2LDDuvE/s1600/chandelier1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ywx09uDxsvA/UqYoQ5CRIyI/AAAAAAAAPgc/s8js2LDDuvE/s640/chandelier1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p6gFYd_2qv4/UqYoSzcM5-I/AAAAAAAAPgo/MH_dbwe-QDg/s1600/chandelier2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p6gFYd_2qv4/UqYoSzcM5-I/AAAAAAAAPgo/MH_dbwe-QDg/s640/chandelier2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I began by twisting the end of the wire to one of the hooks. I cut a length about 18" long and began threading little beads on. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q_jNwVO_-S0/UqYoSyz1l7I/AAAAAAAAPgk/ibER5AfFwyA/s1600/chandelier3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q_jNwVO_-S0/UqYoSyz1l7I/AAAAAAAAPgk/ibER5AfFwyA/s640/chandelier3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used the tiny beads from this assortment, adding them randomly. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cMpuAGpyNOI/UqYoTA-KZ4I/AAAAAAAAPgs/1NOjOyTSsDs/s1600/chandelier4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cMpuAGpyNOI/UqYoTA-KZ4I/AAAAAAAAPgs/1NOjOyTSsDs/s640/chandelier4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JCJ3ztHIhuY/UqYoWDs5z_I/AAAAAAAAPhA/0ZdQavERd9A/s1600/chandelier5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JCJ3ztHIhuY/UqYoWDs5z_I/AAAAAAAAPhA/0ZdQavERd9A/s640/chandelier5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I had enough beaded to make a little swag, I wrapped the wire around the next hook and continued around the entire mobile. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o7kIZgiQ6HY/UqYoWT10BNI/AAAAAAAAPhI/8eoHPp1r9MY/s1600/chandelier6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o7kIZgiQ6HY/UqYoWT10BNI/AAAAAAAAPhI/8eoHPp1r9MY/s640/chandelier6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I added another layer, with less beads, above those swags. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KjMMyiAzV28/UqYoVWtb3DI/AAAAAAAAPg8/2x93lq0anSQ/s1600/chandelier7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KjMMyiAzV28/UqYoVWtb3DI/AAAAAAAAPg8/2x93lq0anSQ/s640/chandelier7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I glued a large silver bead over each of the hooks to help keep the wires on...and I added some dangly bits attached in the center, like the heart bead. These dangling wires ended up being a bit too long so I wound them around a round toothpick to make them like springs, which made them shorter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SlChIliicLk/UqYqFzhPbnI/AAAAAAAAPhY/Jk1wseWGqP4/s1600/snowjar7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SlChIliicLk/UqYqFzhPbnI/AAAAAAAAPhY/Jk1wseWGqP4/s640/snowjar7.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
To assemble the jar, I glued the snowy mound into the bottom of the jar. I added extra glitter, which settled nicely all along the bottom of the snowy mound. Then I attached the chandelier to the hook inside the show stopper lid and screwed the lid onto the jar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IIJ378ZuuhY/UqYqldIBR7I/AAAAAAAAPhg/Q4RYVs1_sBA/s1600/snowjar16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IIJ378ZuuhY/UqYqldIBR7I/AAAAAAAAPhg/Q4RYVs1_sBA/s640/snowjar16.jpg" width="480" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Can you even stand how adorable this is? You have got to make a little version of your family for your own little snow jar! </div>

They are both crazy about typography/subway art so I decided to make her a custom sign commemorating their big day. It turned out so well I thought you might like to see how I did it.<br />
<br />
The first thing I did was to design the layout. I used a 9" x 12" gallery wrapped canvas so I designed the layout on a regular letter size paper. I used a serif (footed) font and adjusted the font size and kerning (spacing between letters) so that each word spanned from the left to the right edge of the paper. If you want to get fancy, you can add vertical words. I wanted to keep it pretty simple.<br />
<br />
I used a black canvas but you could always prep a plain white canvas by painting it black first. Black gesso would work great...and would simulate chalkboard nicely. You could also make this on a painted wood panel.<br />
<br />
Saral Transfer Paper in white is excellent for transferring the letters. You simply sandwich the transfer paper between the printout and the canvas. Make sure the transfer side is against the canvas or the transfer will be made on the reverse side of the printout...oops! Be sure to center the printout. Tape into place to secure it while you trace the letters. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0l037a1mUYE/UqCOFs1lmsI/AAAAAAAAPeU/WbwZFIbrmzQ/s1600/ashleyaustin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0l037a1mUYE/UqCOFs1lmsI/AAAAAAAAPeU/WbwZFIbrmzQ/s640/ashleyaustin1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q55g2QokG7k/UqCOFx-f4rI/AAAAAAAAPeQ/6-e_RU2O3oY/s1600/ashleyaustin2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q55g2QokG7k/UqCOFx-f4rI/AAAAAAAAPeQ/6-e_RU2O3oY/s640/ashleyaustin2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NsF56XPj28Q/UqCOF7zWIoI/AAAAAAAAPeM/fhUY6Q0SlOM/s1600/ashleyaustin3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NsF56XPj28Q/UqCOF7zWIoI/AAAAAAAAPeM/fhUY6Q0SlOM/s640/ashleyaustin3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaKtDDTbY0A/UqCOGTRzVzI/AAAAAAAAPec/IPmqGKm71g4/s1600/ashleyaustin4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaKtDDTbY0A/UqCOGTRzVzI/AAAAAAAAPec/IPmqGKm71g4/s640/ashleyaustin4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
White will be transferred to the background but I think that adds to the chalkboard effect. It's okay if you miss parts of the transfer. See how I missed part of the "Y"? There is enough there for me to fill in with the next step.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using a white oil pencil (or you could use a white colored pencil or white chalk pencil), fill in the letters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTJQrvQyq9E/UqCOGgGUByI/AAAAAAAAPe4/FnCEyeOzbqs/s1600/ashleyaustin5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qTJQrvQyq9E/UqCOGgGUByI/AAAAAAAAPe4/FnCEyeOzbqs/s640/ashleyaustin5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use a fixative spray to protect the piece. This is especially important if you used colored pencil or chalk.</div>
<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This same process can be used to create art with special quotes and personalized messages.</div>

When children leave their shoes out the night before, St. Nick will stop by and fill them with treats. He leaves children treats at Alfredo's school too. The children usually leave their shoes lined up in the hallway but last year St. Nick's helpers were caught red-handed. This year, I helped St. Nick by making paper shoes. Look how sweet they turned out:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FHtNCYHFhLQ/Up9TODhhkEI/AAAAAAAAPdg/-oujHWu-vh0/s1600/stnickshoe1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FHtNCYHFhLQ/Up9TODhhkEI/AAAAAAAAPdg/-oujHWu-vh0/s640/stnickshoe1.jpg" width="578" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I adapted <a href="http://www.stnicholascenter.org/media/assets/craft_shoes.pdf" target="_blank">this pattern</a> by adding a shoe tongue and real ribbon laces. Then I printed the template onto patterned scrapbook paper. <a href="http://www.amy-powers.com/downloads/shoes%20001.pdf" target="_blank">Here's the template for my adaptation</a> if you want to make some too. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_wSo1bF_8c4/Up9TOgq3O5I/AAAAAAAAPds/-l1JYMHCo-0/s1600/stnickshoe4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_wSo1bF_8c4/Up9TOgq3O5I/AAAAAAAAPds/-l1JYMHCo-0/s640/stnickshoe4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
St. Nick traditionally leaves gold coins, a candy cane and a clementine. We have allergy concerns in the classroom so I used plastic coins instead of chocolate or candy ones. I added a few little gifts like a Christmas pencil and eraser, a ball, and a little pad of paper. I also tucked in a St. Nicholas prayer card. I put all the gifts (except the prayer card and clementine) in a little muslin bag with an ironed-on graphic. I used one of the sticker graphics from <a href="http://www.stnicholascenter.org/pages/things-print/" target="_blank">here</a>. <br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oGPFWL1QeS8/Up9TOUXxoRI/AAAAAAAAPdk/q9dYb_K8GjY/s1600/stnickshoe2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oGPFWL1QeS8/Up9TOUXxoRI/AAAAAAAAPdk/q9dYb_K8GjY/s640/stnickshoe2.jpg" width="480" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whew! 30 paper shoes, all set to deliver on Friday. We'll set them out at their desks while they are at mass in the morning.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

Happy St. Nicholas Day...December 6!</div>

<br />
I'm getting ready for the craft fair at Alfredo's
school this weekend. At the urging of some friends, I signed up for table . My father made rosaries to sell...and I asked sweet <a href="http://kristenrobinson.typepad.com/kristenrobinson/" target="_blank">Kristen Robinson</a> to make necklaces<a href="http://inspireco.blogspot.com/2009/07/grace.html" target="_blank"> like the beautiful one she made me</a>.
I'm always, always getting compliments on it and people always want to
know where I got it. I knew it would be a good thing to offer. She made
10 beautiful necklaces for me to sell. <br />
<br />
So inspired by these two very religious items to sell, I decided to run with it and offer other items with a religious theme.<br />
<br />
I set up a table in my family room so I could plan out the displays. Want to see?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xr8xFpc8p2E/Uo4od7T7vdI/AAAAAAAAPbA/PC8hnjXCmgI/s1600/craftfairsetup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xr8xFpc8p2E/Uo4od7T7vdI/AAAAAAAAPbA/PC8hnjXCmgI/s640/craftfairsetup.jpg" width="640" /> </a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used kraft wrapping paper with gold stars stamped on it (Dollar Store!) to skirt the table. I'll just use packing tape to tape it along the table top's edge. I had these table runners from my shop years ago. I just cut them in half and hung them along the table front, again using packing tape to secure. I topped the table with some kraft paper printed with scrolls. The nice thing about it is that everything is really sturdy. Sometimes using a cloth, especially a thick one, can make things wobbly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F4mERvbSq1c/Uo4ofU2jrSI/AAAAAAAAPb0/XEyHWfZ-IkI/s1600/craftfairsetup8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F4mERvbSq1c/Uo4ofU2jrSI/AAAAAAAAPb0/XEyHWfZ-IkI/s640/craftfairsetup8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
I put my father's rosaries in this flat drawer cabinet. I sorted them by color to make them easy to find. Can you believe these are only $15? And he gives all the money, not just the profit, to his church. Isn't he a sweetie? He's going to be there with me on Saturday, with all of his supplies to make rosaries on the spot.<br />
<br />
And how about that sign?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GXdFAhM4Tis/Uo4ofoCc5SI/AAAAAAAAPb8/mmbMdZDseoY/s1600/craftfairsetup9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GXdFAhM4Tis/Uo4ofoCc5SI/AAAAAAAAPb8/mmbMdZDseoY/s640/craftfairsetup9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I saw these chalkboard sandwich signs at Michael's, I knew they'd make great signs! I used white Saral transfer paper to transfer a printout of the sign to the chalkboard. Then I used a white chalk pencil to fill it in. Didn't it turn out great? And it was quick...I did all of these signs in less than an hour!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3N8W2VREdo/Uo4oeJaHKLI/AAAAAAAAPbU/2iNqPdJzOu0/s1600/craftfairsetup2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3N8W2VREdo/Uo4oeJaHKLI/AAAAAAAAPbU/2iNqPdJzOu0/s640/craftfairsetup2.jpg" width="432" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the necklace display, I spray painted an old dress mirror frame antique gold. I added a flat board to the bottom for stability. I covered some foam core with osnaburg fabric using spray mount and I just used pins to hold the necklaces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put the extra necklaces on a velvet lined tray above. As the necklaces sell, I can consolidate the display to go in the mirror frame.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2nKNOr95vRM/Uo4oefp3pJI/AAAAAAAAPbY/Etc2dDu8fYs/s1600/craftfairsetup3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2nKNOr95vRM/Uo4oefp3pJI/AAAAAAAAPbY/Etc2dDu8fYs/s640/craftfairsetup3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
Aren't these necklaces breathtaking? Kristen did such a lovely job...I don't know which is my favorite!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AR__23P7qmg/Uo4oeyTu2II/AAAAAAAAPbs/hzgy828kLK4/s1600/craftfairsetup5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AR__23P7qmg/Uo4oeyTu2II/AAAAAAAAPbs/hzgy828kLK4/s640/craftfairsetup5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These prayer journals were a fun project. I used those cheap plastic photo albums ($1 from Walmart and the dollar store) and filled them with prayers and scripture readings that I machine-stitched to scrapbook paper cut to 4" x 6".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kZv9T4cOjsk/Uo4oerhs1WI/AAAAAAAAPbg/k8BKqfohVT4/s1600/craftfairsetup4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kZv9T4cOjsk/Uo4oerhs1WI/AAAAAAAAPbg/k8BKqfohVT4/s640/craftfairsetup4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have a few more things to make but I think I'm ready! We're going to pick up my parents this afternoon (my sister is meeting us halfway with them).<br />
<br />
If you're in the area, I hope you'll stop by St. Timothy Catholic School in Chantilly, Virginia on Saturday. I'll see you there!<br />

I'm working on the Christmas issue! It's a good one! Hoping to publish on Monday, just in time for some good ol' Thanksgiving afternoon crafting! <br />
<br />
I'm hoping today to give you a sneak peek at another fun thing I'm busy working on...the craft fair at Alfredo's school. This weekend! See, I told you I was busy! <br />

<br />
Can you believe how adorable that house is (and that boy!)?<br />
<br />
I was playing around with Brenda Walton's new Country Cottage die from Sizzix and Alfredo wanted to make one too. He did great...even lining up the scallop roof! He picked glittery paper for the house and shiny silver metallic paper for the roof. Great choices, right? It looks so adorable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKSji5AaVi8/UoDmMyI8s3I/AAAAAAAAPZE/ROlXSomLgzI/s1600/alfredoshouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKSji5AaVi8/UoDmMyI8s3I/AAAAAAAAPZE/ROlXSomLgzI/s640/alfredoshouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Best of all, the whole house is hinged so we can tuck in a little battery powered tea light. He wanted to put a little ornament of a teddy bear on a rocking horse in there too. So cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HfOrMLGNMnE/UoDmL2exNdI/AAAAAAAAPY8/X_6ZFmk0I1Y/s1600/alfredoshouse3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HfOrMLGNMnE/UoDmL2exNdI/AAAAAAAAPY8/X_6ZFmk0I1Y/s640/alfredoshouse3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I think this might be our Christmas craft gift from Alfredo this year! He loved making it and can even almost operate the Big Shot on his own!<br />

It records you drawing and telling a story as you draw. Alfredo made this funny little movie this morning. I thought all of you Alfredo fans out there would enjoy hearing his sweet voice. And the best part is when he cracks himself up in the middle. Oh that giggle! <br />
<br />
Enjoy!<br />

<br />
Alfredo dressed as St. Francis of Assisi today for the All Saints Parade at school. I made his robe out of a bath sheet size towel and a hand towel for the hood. We didn't have any rope so I braided some thinner cord together to make his belt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I bought a bald cap for him but he didn't want to use it...so I just tried to brush his hair forward.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aZWL2wNNQNU/Um52uBZS15I/AAAAAAAAO-I/Bz_TfJrqcYw/s1600/halloweenbonus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aZWL2wNNQNU/Um52uBZS15I/AAAAAAAAO-I/Bz_TfJrqcYw/s640/halloweenbonus.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We're having so much fun over at my Big Picture Class, <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/crafthappy/register.php" target="_blank">Craft Happy.</a> Above is a bonus project for Halloween. I made them in the summer but just looking at them makes me want to make more. Maybe if we get homework done early tonight. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-us9QlrJDiYU/Um6BMzcmkmI/AAAAAAAAPFI/TVCQ8lBOQQ0/s1600/honeybadger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-us9QlrJDiYU/Um6BMzcmkmI/AAAAAAAAPFI/TVCQ8lBOQQ0/s640/honeybadger.jpg" width="594" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
Alfredo is super excited to be a honey badger for Halloween since that's his favorite animal in the whole world. If you don't know about the honey badger, it is arguably the most fierce of all creatures. It fears nothing and will take on a king cobra, a lion, anything that crosses its path. I bought a skunk costume and added claws to plain black gloves. I'm not sure if the fangs will work out...he can only wear them for 4 seconds at a time. Maybe I'll sew some fangs on the costume head instead. Running out of time, though. And I still have to fashion a saint costume for the All Saints parade. You can just guess who our nature lover will be dressed as. You got it...St. Francis of Assisi!<br />
<br />
It's not too late to join in the fun of Craft Happy! <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/crafthappy/register.php" target="_blank">Sneak in through the back door and register here</a>. We're getting ready to start this advent countdown project...<br />

I can't believe it's already been a week since I boarded a plane for <a href="http://housewrenstudio.typepad.com/charlotte/2013/05/vermont-getaway-details.html" target="_blank">our crafty getaway</a>. It was so lovely...and, although the time moved nice and slow and we were able to savor every delicious moment, it's over and back to regular old life.<br />

<br />
Well, not quite. Thanks to the government shut down, that sweetie pie Rich is home, repainting every room in the house. Poor Alfredo never wants to go to school anymore...I suppose he imagines us having a party without him everyday. <br />
<br />
Meanwhile, there <strong>IS</strong> a party going on over at my <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/crafthappy/register.php" target="_blank">Big Picture Class, Craft Happy</a>! I hope you're not missing it. (You can sneak in if you hurry! <em>but hurry!</em>)<br />
<br />
And, just in case you need something to sweeten the deal, did you know I'm doing giveaways in the class? And some really, really, really good ones. For instance, today's giveaway:<br />

Here's a sneak peek at a couple of the fun projects we'll make. I'm especially crazy about the coffee cozy. I think I've told you before I'm not great on my sewing machine...but let me tell you, I was cranking these out. Just looking at it here again makes me want to make more. Super fun! And, hello? <br />
First, how sweet is this?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7j0zWo5Gvw/UjyCrctn-KI/AAAAAAAAOpo/MVoex4YH1qU/s1600/alfredogodcreatedyou.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7j0zWo5Gvw/UjyCrctn-KI/AAAAAAAAOpo/MVoex4YH1qU/s640/alfredogodcreatedyou.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We have an ongoing contest between the two of us. I say I love him more...he says he loves me more. At some point during the day, after one of us does an extraordinary act of love for the other or if we are the last one to say it or say it more exuberantly, we declare that person winner for that round. Alfredo won yesterday with this declaration...irrefutable since he wrote it at school. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pxuF4jmXjGc/UjyDVcMBJgI/AAAAAAAAOpw/Fz_3OgTD9Tw/s1600/alfredomore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pxuF4jmXjGc/UjyDVcMBJgI/AAAAAAAAOpw/Fz_3OgTD9Tw/s640/alfredomore.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
p.s. Alfredo wins every round. He will never concede that I win. The best he will give me is that we love each other precisely the same. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fZ6mZksj-XU/UjyE39hD1mI/AAAAAAAAOp8/3lh9sTJ_IMY/s640/alfredopicture.jpg" width="390" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the adorable picture he drew on the inside of the card. He's just started making more composed drawings. Before he might only draw a picture of me or a picture of a squirrel. But here we have a sky full of birds, a squirrel climbing a tree, and Alfredo and me sharing a watermelon picnic, the basket between us. I love everything about it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w3RMbaLDIes/UjyFmsmxz6I/AAAAAAAAOqE/OaENiKYx5xg/s1600/alfredopicnic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w3RMbaLDIes/UjyFmsmxz6I/AAAAAAAAOqE/OaENiKYx5xg/s640/alfredopicnic.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't you?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f9fSSF8kinM/UjyFmpr0UWI/AAAAAAAAOqI/BwqcpARwcXI/s1600/alfredosquirrel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f9fSSF8kinM/UjyFmpr0UWI/AAAAAAAAOqI/BwqcpARwcXI/s640/alfredosquirrel.jpg" width="492" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
Happy weekend! <br />
<br />
p.s. <br />
I love you more!amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01303734061612087570noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13359907.post-38010635744648837142013-09-19T10:48:00.000-04:002013-09-19T10:48:13.413-04:00teacups everywhere!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After making 100 of these paper teacups (from Brenda Walton's Sizzix Die), I think I can safely say that I'm an expert. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Don't they look sweet filled with these chocolate squares? I made these teacups for a tea that my Bible study is hosting on Sunday. The Bible study, Walking With Purpose, has pink and green as its official colors. It was fun staying in that theme. But a little challenging to find papers, especially 2-sided, in those colors this time of year. And it makes such a difference to use 2-sided paper. So excited to share these with the ladies.</div>

<br />
I have so many pots on the fire these days that I've forgotten to stir the blog one! So here we go...a big catch up:<br />
<br />
Alfredo is doing great in school. He loves first grade and his teacher is wonderful. So much more is expected of him and he's feeling the pinch a little already. <br />
<br />
Last night, he was near tears as he was telling me about a little boy, Lucas, who "has a calculator built into his brain" and could do math in his head. And when Alfredo said "I'm not good at math" I almost started crying too. Carefully, I talked to him about how much math he does know..."for instance," I said, "if I give you 2 pieces of pizza and then I give you 2 more, how many do you have?" And that darling little boy said, so seriously, "Wait...did I eat the first 2 pieces?!" We rolled on the floor laughing at that one! So cute. <br />
<br />
I have two big projects that I'm super excited about. One is the 12-week online class over at Big Picture Classes. <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/crafthappy/index.php">(Registration is open!) </a> The photo above is a detail of a really cute project that I'm finishing up. Each week, there will be a project with complete instructions and a video tutorial. Plus, there's a creativity exercise each week...and some bonus projects for holidays like Halloween. I have been working for months and months and months getting everything set for this class...and I am so excited to share it with you. <br />
<br />
The other project I'm working on is BIG news! I can spill only a few beans about it...but mostly it's hush-hush. I'm working with Dimensions and designing embroidery samplers! They'll be out in the market next Spring...I'm so excited. I think that's all I can say for now. But, exciting, yes?<br />
<br />
Also, super excited to be counted among the lucky people who signed up in time for <a href="http://housewrenstudio.typepad.com/charlotte/2013/05/vermont-getaway-details.html">Charlotte and Meleen's Vermont Getaway</a>. I cannot wait to see my friends again...and meet new ones. So excited!<br />
<br />
And, speaking of lucky...try not to hate on me too much when I tell you I also signed up in time to go <a href="http://carolynpeeler.typepad.com/la_dolce_vita/">here</a>. My friend Lorraine convinced me that we'd make the cutest travelling pair to tour the Tuscan countryside. I still can't believe it's really happening. <br />
<br />
Okay, so that's a lot of news, isn't it? <br />
<br />

<br />
I'm making paper teacups using my friend Brenda Walton's Sizzix Die. So much fun! I'm just getting the hang of it...although quite a few of these are crooked. I have to make a bunch of them for a tea party my Bible study is hosting at church this month so I'll get a lot of practice.<br />
<br />
Check out the tutorial Brenda created for Sizzix showing how to make these sweet paper teacups:<br />
